The Dangers of Our 'New Data Economy,' and How to Avoid Them
In this PBS NewsHour segment, Roger McNamee discusses what he calls the 'new data economy,' in which personal information — including health data, location history, and data collected on minors — is gathered and monetized with little meaningful consent from the people it describes. He argues that 'we, the people, have little say' over how platforms and device makers use this data, and raises the possibility that behavioral and health data could be used by insurers or other institutions to deny coverage or opportunity. While the segment does not focus specifically on child development or mental health, McNamee names data collected on minors as one category he believes deserves distinct legal scrutiny. TechKids Foundation includes this segment as a mainstream-news explanation of the data-privacy dimension of McNamee's broader platform-design critique.
