"The Rabbit Hole" — The Weekly / The New York Times Presents, Season 1 Episode 9 (on YouTube in Brazil)

Aug 2019 🇺🇸 🇧🇷 FX / Hulu (The New York Times)

"The Rabbit Hole" is an August 2019 episode of the New York Times documentary series then called The Weekly (later renamed The New York Times Presents), reported on-camera by Max Fisher and Amanda Taub. The episode follows their investigation into YouTube's recommendation engine in Brazil, where the platform was more widely watched than nearly every television channel, and examines how its algorithm favored right-wing and conspiracy-oriented channels in the years around the rise of far-right president Jair Bolsonaro. Fisher and Taub present this as a pattern they associate with the platform's own design choices for maximizing watch time, not as proof that any single video or channel caused Brazil's political shift. TechKids Foundation includes this televised segment as a distinct, on-camera companion to Fisher's print reporting and book-length work on platform-driven radicalization.
