A Blueprint for a Better Digital Society
In this September 2018 Harvard Business Review essay, Jaron Lanier and economist E. Glen Weyl argue the targeted-advertising model funding most free digital platforms — built on continuous data collection about users — is an unsustainable foundation for the digital economy. They propose an alternative in which people who generate data through everyday online activity would be formally recognized and compensated for it, rather than treated as a resource extracted without acknowledgment. The essay ran as part of a Harvard Business Review series on surveillance, consent, and digital society. TechKids Foundation cites it as a concise, co-authored statement of the 'data dignity' policy proposal Lanier develops across his other work, presented as a specific reform argument, not a settled conclusion.
