As Big Tech Is Found Liable for Harm, It's Now Up to Government to Act

Mar 2026 🇬🇧 🇺🇸 Molly Rose Foundation

Suicide and self-harm are complex and never caused by one factor alone. Problematic screen use, cyberbullying, harmful content, and online exploitation may increase risk or intensify existing distress. If someone is in immediate danger or emotional crisis in the United States, call or text 988.

In this March 2026 statement, published on the Molly Rose Foundation's website after separate U.S. court rulings in Los Angeles and New Mexico found Meta and Google liable for social-media-related harm, Ian Russell — the foundation's founder and chair — argued the rulings had not yet changed the companies' underlying practices. Russell said the business models he believes drove harmful content to his daughter Molly 'at a frightening scale' before her 2017 death remained largely intact, and called on the UK government to use the moment to strengthen the Online Safety Act's duties on addictive design features rather than pursue blanket platform bans. This is a self-published statement, not independently reported coverage of the underlying U.S. rulings. TechKids Foundation includes it as a documented instance of Russell linking a specific legal outcome to his ongoing UK policy advocacy, framed in his own words rather than as an independent TechKids finding.
