Disrupted Childhood: The Cost of Persuasive Design
Disrupted Childhood: The Cost of Persuasive Design is a 5Rights Foundation report, first published in 2018 and updated in April 2023, examining design features — endless scroll, autoplay, streaks, and push notifications among them — built into popular apps and games. The report argues these features are engineered primarily to maximize engagement and data collection rather than to serve children's interests, and links this design approach to broader concerns about children's social, developmental, and physical wellbeing. It closes with 24 recommendations directed at regulators, governments, and companies. As Baroness Kidron states in the report, policymakers "must refocus their attention on the pervasive use of persuasive design." TechKids Foundation cites this report as an example of 5Rights' own research translating design choices into a policy agenda, framed throughout as an association between design and risk rather than a claim of direct causation.
The report's updated 2023 edition lists 24 recommendations for regulators, governments, and companies aimed at curbing persuasive design directed at children.
