Why We Must Protect the Digital Rights of Children
In this February 2016 TEDx talk, filmmaker and 5Rights Foundation founder Beeban Kidron argues that protections children already hold offline under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child are routinely absent once children go online. She describes how digital services can track, profile, and target young users in ways adults rarely notice, and lays out the 5Rights framework — rights she argues should extend automatically to children in digital spaces. The talk presents no original data; it is a policy argument aimed at lawmakers and technologists, built on Kidron's advocacy work up to that point. TechKids Foundation includes it in the library as a concise, widely viewed public statement of the rights-based case for treating design and data practices as child-safety issues, distinct from any claim about specific psychological harms.
